Advocate Ivan Okuda is a Legal Associate at the firm. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK, specializing in energy law, construction law, and arbitration. He has represented clients in the construction industry both at the High Court of Uganda and in arbitration including the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) where he was Lead Counsel in an international construction dispute as well as the several disputes before the International Center for Arbitration and Mediation in Kampala (ICAMEK) and the defunct Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution (CADER) in Uganda.
Mr. Okuda also advises clients in the energy sector, specifically focusing on renewable energy projects. He is also an Independent Power Producer and is currently engaged in renewable energy project development, including a 2.8 MW small hydro-power project in eastern Uganda and a 50 MW (modular) solar power project in north-eastern Uganda. This practical experience in the industry offers clients in the sector a unique advantage.
Ivan holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Makerere University, Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, Master of Arts (Journalism and Media Studies) with specialty in Media Law and Ethics and Investigative Journalism from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg where he was a Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Media Africa Scholar in 2019. He has recently completed a Master of Laws (LLM) in Construction Law and Arbitration from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland. He is an alumnus of the USA State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and has extensive experience in East Africa’s media industry.
